The South African Sanitation Technology Enterprise Programme (SASTEP) is a national system of innovation platform that fast-tracks the adoption of innovative sanitation technologies in South Africa, fostering local manufacturing and commercialisation. Our core strategy supports sanitation innovators (technology partners) and entrepreneurs (commercial partners) to advance water for sanitation solutions and sustainable systems. SASTEP’s approach relies on collaborative partnerships to translate cutting-edge technologies – including wastewater treatment innovations – into scalable, market-ready solutions.
The programme was created by the Water Research Commission (WRC) in partnership with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), and the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), ensuring alignment with national priorities for water for sanitation and environmental sustainability.
SASTEP is the operational vehicle of the WRC’s transformational SANiTi: Sanitation Transformation Initiative, which champions equitable access to dignified sanitation while prioritising water security and pollution reduction.
