About Us

The South African Sanitation Technology Enterprise Programme (SASTEP) is a national system of innovation platform that fast-tracks the adoption of innovative sanitation technologies in South Africa, fostering local manufacturing and commercialisation. Our core strategy supports sanitation innovators (technology partners) and entrepreneurs (commercial partners) to advance water for sanitation solutions and sustainable systems. SASTEP’s approach relies on collaborative partnerships to translate cutting-edge technologies – including wastewater treatment innovations – into scalable, market-ready solutions.

The programme was created by the Water Research Commission (WRC) in partnership with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), and the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), ensuring alignment with national priorities for water for sanitation and environmental sustainability.

SASTEP is the operational vehicle of the WRC’s transformational SANiTi: Sanitation Transformation Initiative, which champions equitable access to dignified sanitation while prioritising water security and pollution reduction.

OUR VISION

“Upon conclusion of SASTEP, a rejuvenated South African sanitation industry will emerge – creating jobs, boosting GDP, and leading globally in alternative sanitation technologies. These innovations will ensure access to dignified sanitation, minimise pollution, beneficiate waste, and promote health, safety, and water for sanitation security for all.”

OUR OBJECTIVES

  • Develop a demonstration platform for local and international water for sanitation technologies.

  • Integrate the emerging sanitation industry into national economic frameworks, emphasising wastewater treatment and circular economy solutions.

  • Facilitate uptake of new sanitation technologies to achieve 1% market share.

  • Support local manufacturing through investor matchmaking and capacity-building.

  • Champion policy advocacy for sustainable sanitation and water for sanitation initiatives.

  • Promote gender equality across all programmes.

  • Document business models from localisation and industrialisation efforts.
